Old Trout Bum

A WEBSITE FOR FLY FISHERMEN AND WOMEN WHO WANT TO DREAM A LITTLE, LEARN A LITTLE, FIND INSPIRATION, GIVE BACK AND PAY IT FORWARD

I've read to keep your brain from atrophy, you have to learn completely new things. I figured website development was plenty new enough for my technologically challenged brain, so this website is brain exercise.

As I was thinking about what kind of site to start, I happened across a you tube video on carnivorous brown trout (when I can't fish, sometimes I watch fish porn). 3 young punks with carefully grown three day stubble (which probably took them 10 days to grow ), new jeeps they drove through the mud to make them look cool, high end gear, and clearly a professional videographer. I clicked on a couple more videos, and found most of them are made by youngsters who are acting like fishing is an extreme sport.

George Bernard Shaw gets credit for saying it best -- "Youth is wasted on the young." I'm making this website mostly for my brain, but also for old men and women like me. Mature, seasoned -- been around the block more than a couple of times. And maybe young men and women who are savvy enough to realize they'll be old someday also and want to get a head start on fishing wisdom. My passion is fishing and fly fishing is my first love, but I have and I will use any technique. Centerpinning, baitcasting, spinning, hand-lining, cast-netting, jug fishing, yo-yo-ing -- everything but trot-lines. I know some folks seriously need the protein trot-lines generate, but I don't like them.

Pro Tips

Fishing should be a year round practice. In the winter, layer your clothing (duh) and take a thermos of coffee or soup. Find a place where you can fish less than 10-15 minutes from where you park. Fish until you get cold and go back to the vehicle, drink some soup and warm up. Fish again. If you get tired of that cycle go home. Even if you only get one cycle on the water, it will be worth it.

Guide Reviews

Mossy Creek Fly Fishing (Harrisonburg, Virginia)

1/6

Brian and Colby Trow are the their generation's Lefty Kreh and Lee Wulff. My local fly shop, and local go-to guys. These guys hooked me up (pun intended). They are getting so busy in the fishing business they don't guide very much any more -- but tell them you want to fish with the best guides on the east coast, and you know that's them. They're almost -- but not quite -- the type of guys that motivated me to start this site for mature fisherpeople. But they're humble, which makes all the difference.
